It’s often said that you end up as a combination of the 5 people you spend the most time with, but did you know that you can use this to your advantage?
Think about it, if you hang out with lots of fitness enthusiasts, you’ll probably end up at the gym. If you’re always with people who often go out drinking, then that’s more than likely where you will also end up. Now obviously these are very simplified examples to convey the point, however there is some science in it.
Using this same principle, let’s take two people for a scenario: one of them has many friends who are unhappy and unmotivated in their careers. Who only ever speak about their jobs in a negative light and have no drive to make any sort of changes, completely ambivalent towards progression. The second person’s friends are the complete opposite. They are all keen on building careers and are actively pursuing financial success.
Imagine both person 1 & 2 were identical in every other demographic except friendship group. They may be identical, but purely from social circle alone, person 2 would have a distinct advantage. They wouldn’t be held back in a negative mindset from the people around them, instead they’d likely be enabled and pushed on by their friends.
Now I’m not saying if you’re not in the same situation as person 1 you need to immediately distance yourself from your friends. It’s more about being aware of the mindset of people who you surround yourself with. Take positivity from positive people, and leave the negativity to negative people.
Maybe make an effort to spend more time with those who already have similar traits or situation to where you are aiming to be. Look at the sorts of people they surround themselves with and the settings in which they spend their time – is this something you could emulate?
